Caladium Fire Chief

Caladium ‘Fire Chief’ is a striking variety of Caladium known for its vibrant red and green foliage. To ensure its health and beauty, follow these care guidelines:

Light: Caladiums thrive in bright, indirect light or filtered sunlight. Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight, which can scorch their delicate leaves. Place them near a north or east-facing window or in a location with dappled sunlight.
Temperature: Caladiums prefer temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Avoid exposing them to temperatures below 55°F (13°C), as they are sensitive to cold.
Humidity: These plants appreciate high humidity levels. If the air is dry, you can increase humidity by misting the leaves, using a humidity tray, or placing a room humidifier nearby.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water thoroughly when the top inch (2.5 cm) of the soil feels slightly dry. Ensure proper drainage to prevent overwatering and root rot.
Soil: Plant your Caladium ‘Fire Chief’ in a well-draining, peat-based potting mix. A mix formulated for aroids or tropical plants is suitable.
Container: Choose a pot with drainage holes to prevent water accumulation. Make sure the pot isn’t significantly larger than the root ball, as Caladiums prefer slightly snug conditions.
Fertilizing: Feed your Caladium ‘Fire Chief’ with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop fertilizing in the dormant season (fall and winter).
Pruning: Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves by cutting them at the base. Regular pruning helps maintain the plant’s appearance and health.
Pests and Diseases: Caladiums can be susceptible to pests like spider mites and aphids. Inspect your plant regularly and treat any infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Dormancy: Caladiums may go dormant during the winter months, during which their leaves may die back. Reduce watering and allow the plant to rest. New growth will emerge when conditions become more favourable.
Propagation: Caladiums can be propagated by dividing the tubers during their dormant period. Gently separate the tubers and plant them in separate pots.
Repotting: Caladiums don’t require frequent repotting. Repot when the plant becomes root-bound or when tubers start to outgrow the pot. Choose a slightly larger pot and fresh potting mix.
