Coleus “Green”

Be one with nature and match your green thumb with a greener home. Depending on where you live, you may refer to them as painted nettle or poor man’s croton, but for most of us, they are simply known as coleus plants (Coleus blumei). For my part, I’m rather fond of them, as are many others. Foliage colours range from green, yellow, red, maroon, and pink to a variety of other hues. Coleus leaves come in a broad range of sizes and forms. You can thus choose coleus that is suitable for every location. This is great news. Plants like this are excellent for bringing life and vibrancy to dreary areas of the yard or house.

Care

It’s just as simple to take care of coleus. Especially newly planted coleus has to be kept wet. Container plants also need to be watered more often than garden plants. However, a half-strength liquid fertilizer can be applied to the plants throughout their active growth periods in spring and summer. They normally bloom in July, however, you may get rid of the spiked blooms if you’d like. In order to encourage bushier development, you can pinch the shoots of immature coleus plants, as well. As a fragile annual, coleus is particularly vulnerable to freezing temperatures. Overwintering is an important part of coleus management. As a result, they need to be dug up, potted up, and taken inside for the winter, or they can be propagated from cuttings to produce more plants in the spring.
