Vriesea Red

Vriesea is a flowering plant genus in the Bromeliaceae subfamily Tillandsioideae. The genus is named after Willem Hendrik de Vriese, a Dutch botanist and physician who lived from 1806 to 1862. Its species may be found across Mexico, Central America, South America, and the West Indies.

Unlike the lesser Catopsis species, which contain some of the most giant bromeliad species, these tropical plants have a diverse insect life. In the wild, frogs can spend their whole life cycle in a bromeliad. This genus is linked to Guzmania.

Like the Dandelion, Guzmania and Vriesea have dry capsules that burst apart to produce parachute-like seeds (Taraxacum sp.). The majority of Vriesea are epiphytes, meaning they grow on trees without soil. They don’t have roots, but they do have specific holdfasts that don’t absorb nutrition. All nutrients are absorbed via the middle “tank” formed by a rosette of leaves.

Care: Indoors, place the flame sword houseplant in bright, indirect light. In the winter, if feasible, allow for some direct morning or evening sun. Vriesea plants should be kept in temperatures above 60 degrees Fahrenheit (16 degrees Celsius), but no more than 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 C.).
