Camellia japonica

Classic, formal double blooms in shades of white / pink / red on glossy evergreen foliage. A statement shrub for patios, entrances and cool indoor lobbies.

Size (potted): typically 70–150 cm • Bloom: late winter–spring (may be irregular in the tropics)

Care (hot/humid climates like SG)

• Light: Bright shade to gentle morning sun; protect from harsh afternoon sun.

• Temperature: Prefers cool air (15–24 °C). Heat can cause bud drop—keep roots cool with mulch.

• Water: Keep evenly moist, never waterlogged. Use rainwater if possible.

• Soil: Acidic, well-drained mix (pH ~5.5–6.5) for azalea/camellia.

• Feed: Acid-loving slow-release fertiliser after flowering; avoid high-nitrogen in summer.

• Prune: Light trim right after bloom to shape.

• Pests: Watch for tea scale, aphids, spider mites—treat early.

Tip for Singapore: Best grown in a shaded, breezy patio or air-conditioned indoor spot with bright light. Sasanqua types are a bit more heat-tolerant; japonica needs extra care to flower well.
