Grammatophyllum

Bulbophyllum orchids are a fascinating and diverse genus, but they do have some unique care requirements compared to more commonly grown orchids like Phalaenopsis or Dendrobium. Here’s a care guide to keep them thriving:

Bulbophyllum Orchid Care Guide

🔆 Light

  • Indirect, filtered light is best.

  • Avoid direct sun—too much light can scorch the leaves.

  • Dappled shade mimicking forest understorey is ideal.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Warm to intermediate growers.

    • Day: 22–30°C (72–86°F)

    • Night: 15–20°C (59–68°F)

  • High humidity: 60–80% is optimal.

  • Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.

💧 Watering

  • Bulbophyllums like to stay moist, not soggy.

  • Water frequently, especially during active growth.

  • Use pure water if possible (rain, distilled, or reverse osmosis), especially for sensitive species.

  • Never let them dry out completely, especially those without thick pseudobulbs.

🪴 Potting & Media

  • Use fine bark, sphagnum moss, or a mix depending on your environment.

  • Repot every 1–2 years to avoid media breakdown.

🌱 Fertilizer

  • Use a balanced orchid fertilizer  at quarter to half strength.

  • Feed weekly during growing season, reduce in dormancy.

⚠️ Special Notes

  • Bulbophyllum blooms can have a strong or unusual scent—some are fragrant, others smell like rotting meat to attract flies!

  • Watch for rot, especially at the base—good airflow and proper watering habits help.

  • Some species have creeping rhizomes—shallow, wide pots or mounts help accommodate them.
