These orchid seedlings are best for patient hobbyists, collectors, growers, schools, workshops, and customers who enjoy the full growing process. The seedlings need careful handling after opening, so prepare clean pots or trays, suitable orchid potting media, shade, airflow, and a gentle fertiliser routine before deflasking.

Before Opening

If you are bringing the flask to a country with a different climate, keep it unopened for 2 weeks first. This helps the temperature inside the flask adjust gradually. Opening it immediately after a large climate change may shock the seedlings and cause yellowing.

After Deflasking

Transfer the seedlings into small pots, or spread them on a clean tray with suitable orchid potting medium. For cool or dry climates, use a medium-grade mix such as pine bark, sphagnum moss, or perlite. For hot and humid climates, use a small coarse-grade mix such as smashed charcoal bits. Do not use charcoal meant for BBQ because it may contain chemicals that are toxic to plants.

Place the seedlings in shade with 50% or less sunlight and good air circulation. Water at the roots when the potting mix is dry. Feed with a balanced foliar fertiliser twice a week at half the concentration used for mature plants. Allow seedlings to establish roots for about 3 months, then repot them into larger pots when the roots outgrow the current pot.
