Cordyline, commonly known as ti, is a popular ornamental plant that thrives outside in hardiness zones 9-12 and makes an excellent houseplant. Cordyline derives its name from Greek; condyle, which means “club,” refers to the plant’s expanded subterranean stems. Cordyline has leathery leaves that are fashioned like a spear or lance and come in various hues such as green, red, yellow, white, purple, and purplish-red. Indoor care for these plants is uncomplicated and straightforward, but they must be kept warm and receive enough light. Plant them outside in the spring if possible.

Some members of this genus feature fragrant blooms that are followed by fruit. The plant grows slowly and produces cup-shaped, sweet-smelling flowers in white, pink, or pastel lavender. They blossom in early summer and produce tiny berries after the blooms have faded. Flowering is more common in outdoor types; however, flowers can appear on houseplants.

Cordyline Care

If grown in the proper environment, tropical cordyline is a hardy plant. Its numerous variations are bright and cheerful, and it’s a very low-maintenance evergreen shrub. Ti will provide colour to your interior or outdoor garden and is relatively easy to care for.

Cordyline is sensitive to fluoride, which is present in the water supply of many homeowners. If the tips of your ti plant’s leaves are brown, this might be the cause. Switching to a bottled water might be the solution.

Light

Ti requires intense light, although direct sunlight should be avoided in unhabituated plants. Furthermore, green-leaved cordyline thrives in direct sunshine, but plants with coloured leaves may prefer indirect solid or filtered sunlight.

Soil

Cordyline requires a rich, well-drained potting mix with a pH of 6-6.5.

Water

It is critical to maintaining the soil in which your ti is planted constantly wet. Reduce your watering during the winter and water your plant anytime the soil surface seems dry.

Fertilizer

Slow-release pellets can be fed to these plants in the spring. During the growth season, provide the plant once a week with a half-strength liquid 20-20-20 fertilizer. During the winter, do not fertilize.

Temperature and Humidity

Ti thrives in temperatures above 62 degrees Fahrenheit and loves an environment with high humidity. Avoid placing the plant near a source of cold air, such as a window. Because they are jungle plants, if you notice leaf loss, consider increasing both the temperature and humidity.
