Asparagus Fern (文竹)

The beautiful Asparagus setaceus plumosus fern has long wiry stems and delicate frond-like sprays that scramble forth horizontally. It grows bushy at first, then develops long, twining stems with bright green, feathery fronds. In late summer, tiny green-white bell-shaped blooms emerge, which mature into little purple berries. Although Asparagus setaceus appears soft and frilly, it does grow thorns that should be avoided when handling.

Lace Fern, Common Asparagus Fern, and Climbing Asparagus are all names for Asparagus setaceus plumosus. Although it is commonly referred to as a fern, it is actually a member of the lily family. It grows quickly and easily and may reach a height of 2.5m if not trimmed.

Care & Info Guide

Light: Direct, bright sunshine. Direct sunshine may burn the needles, whilst inadequate light may cause them to become yellow and drop.

Water: Keep the plant well-watered, but do not allow it to stand in water. Winter requires less water but don’t allow the soil to totally dry up.

Temperature: Ordinary warm home temps. In the winter, a minimum temperature of 13°C is required.

Humidity: When growing inside, mist increase humidity.

Feed: During the growth season, feed with a weak solution.

Care Tips: Asparagus setaceus may become pot confined due to its assertive growth behaviour. Re-pot in the spring if necessary. Trim in the winter and early spring to keep the ideal size and form. Thorns may be sharp, so use caution while touching them.
