Tillandsia flexuosa
Tillandsia flexuosa is native to Florida, the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, and northern South America, with its southernmost range extending into Colombia. Commonly known as the “Twisted Air Plant,” this species is admired for its elegant, spiraling form. The southern variety features stiff, dark green leaves marked with distinct dark bandingthat deepens as the plant matures.
A resilient and semi-succulent air plant, T. flexuosa develops thick, twisting leaves that stretch gracefully upward as it grows. These leaves are capable of storing substantial amounts of water, allowing the plant to endure dry conditions and periods of drought with ease.
Care
Tillandsia flexuosa thrives in bright, indirect light and appreciates good air circulation. During the warmer months, place it in a well-ventilated, partially shaded spot outdoors or near a bright window indoors. Avoid direct midday sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Ideal temperature range is 10°C to 32°C. The plant can tolerate short periods near 0°C if kept dry and sheltered, but prolonged cold or dampness may cause damage. In cooler seasons, move the plant indoors before night temperatures drop below 6°C.
Maintain moderate to high humidity for best growth, and ensure proper aeration so the plant dries quickly after watering — ideally within an hour. Water thoroughly by misting or soaking, then allow the plant to dry completely before the next watering to prevent rot.
