Chlorophytum comosum (Spider Plant)

Get caught and be struck by the beauty of this web-like plant that looked like it was spun by incy bitsy spiders. Short days and long, unbroken nights for at least three weeks create long, wiry stems up to 2 feet long, occasionally with a few little leaves, but they may emerge at any time of year inside. The ends of the stalks are adorned with white, star-shaped blooms. Small plantlets are formed at the ends of the stems after flowering. In the case of pollination, a 3-angled, leathery fruit is produced that contains flat black seeds.

Care

It is a popular houseplant because of its capacity to thrive in a wide range of environments. The spiked spider plant loves light levels in the medium range, although it can also withstand heavy darkness. An ultraviolet light-intolerant species. It prefers well-drained soil and moderate humidity, although it can withstand dry soil and drought. Temperatures should not go below 45 degrees F. Avoid using tap water to water your plants since it contains chlorine and fluoride, which can cause leaf burn. When it’s cold outside, waterless. Summer is a good time to mist the foliage. Avoid over-fertilizing your plants, since this reduces the number of plantlets that develop. Spider plants may simply be propagated by cuttings or by dividing. Growing stolons and plantlets need a minimum of three weeks of short days and long nights (less than 12 hours of light each day) for the mother plant to mature.
