Jatropha podagric

Dimension: 13cm x 25cmH

Location & Light

We recommend placing yours in a bright, indirect area that receives morning or evening sun. A Jatropha grows best in a north, east, or west-facing window or beneath a light source (such as skyline windows or a semi-shaded conservatory). Remember that the brighter the setting, the more watering will be required to achieve total hydration.

In the spring and summer, a maximum of two hours of early morning or late evening sunshine is recommended, and up to three hours in the fall and winter. Due to the significant risk of sun-scorch and dehydration, do not overexpose your specimen to sunlight. The deep shadow should be avoided at all costs.

Because of their vulnerability to basal or root rot, Jatropha should be kept in a dry environment. With this in mind, let the top third of the soil dry out between waterings throughout the growing season and reduce this further in the fall and winter for its dormant period. Yellowing or wilting leaves, stunted growth, and dry, crispy patches developing on the leaf margins are all signs of under-watering, which is generally caused by too much light/heat or forgetfulness. Overwatering signs include a weaker or rotting stem, no new growth, yellowing lower leaves, and eventual plant death – read more about root rot and how to treat it here!

Improve soil fertility while the plant is actively developing by scraping some compost into two soil without disturbing the plant’s roots. Then, every two weeks, feed the plant a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer, such as fertilizer For Growing, diluted at a rate of 1 teaspoon/litre of water.

As long as you don’t live in an arid region, average room humidity will suffice to keep this plant happy. However, because of the increased risk of browning leaf tips, never place it within a few yards of an active radiator. If you are concerned about dry air, make a humidity tray to offer a moist and stable environment for your plant, which also has the added benefit of reducing the rate of soil drying!
