Singapore’s hot and sunny climate is perfect for growing tropical orchids such as Vandas and Dendrobiums. While most of us prefer to avoid standing under the hot sun for prolong periods, as do most orchids, one orchid that simply thrives in the outdoor sun is Singapore’s National flower – the Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim, previously known as the ‘Vanda’ Miss Joaquim!
The ‘Vanda’ Miss Joaquim worked very hard for Singapore during the early years. As the first orchid hybrid created in the 1893 and named after an Amenian Singaporean, Miss Agnes Joaquim, the ‘Vanda’ Miss Joaquim’s beautiful flowers put Singapore in the limelight in the international cut orchid industry and spear headed Singapore’s role in the promotion of orchid cultivation in Asia.
