Although star jasmine vines (Trachelospermum jasminoides) are not genuine jasmine plants, they certainly resemble them. In the tropics, the evergreen foliage is dark green and glossy, and it produces fragrant white flowers. The vines grow fast and can be used as a trellis, arbour, fence, or ground cover. Provide Star jasmine with a cool environment with bright light when growing locally in Singapore. Star jasmine is simple to cultivate and requires little upkeep and fertilizer.
Water the star jasmine vines at least twice a week. Water more often during severely hot or dry seasons, but let the soil dry between watering. Plants growing in pots may need to be watered several times each week. Apply water when the top inch of soil becomes dry.
Fertilize star jasmine using 15-15-15 fertilizer at the start of the growing season. Spread the fertilizer around the plant’s base, being careful not to brush up against the lower branches. After applying the fertilizer, water it into the soil.
Trim any overgrown vines with pruning shears in the early spring to help preserve their form and limits. Remove any yellow or dead leaves, as well as damaged branches, at any time of year.
Train star jasmine vines by wrapping them around a trellis, arbour, or other surfaces. With a little help, the vines will grow along the surface.
Spray any mealybug-infested vines with insecticidal soap thoroughly once a week until the pests are gone. Spray the vines with horticultural oil between late winter and early summer, when soft scale insects are most active. Most illnesses do not affect star jasmine.
