Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily)

Bless thy bloomers. These are tropical species and hybrids of the Spathiphyllum genus. The peace lily blooms in spring with long-lasting flower stalks that gently hover over the leaves. The plant features glossy oval leaves with pointed tips. Some peace lilies flower twice a year, resulting in months of flowers. Peace lilies are generally planted in the spring while it is still chilly in tropical and subtropical areas. They can be bought as houseplants at any time, though you will need to protect them from cold conditions on the way home. They develop slowly and mature in around three years. Peace lilies are poisonous to pets and people.

Care

Indoors, peace lilies need filtered light to thrive (some varieties can withstand more light than others). Foliage curled or scorched indicates too much light or direct sun. In either case, move the plant to a shadier area. Plants like loose, organic soil. Because these plants are native to tropical canopy conditions with decaying plant detritus, they thrive in similar soil. This plant requires a moist soil and a wicking terracotta or clay pot. Water peace lilies only when the soil is dry an inch below the surface. Summer is the best time to mist peace lilies since they thrive in dampness.  Use filtered water if your tap water is chlorinated. You can also leave tap water for a few days to allow the chlorine go. They prefer wet heat. Cold winds and temperatures below 55°F will kill the plant. Your peace lily prefers 65-80°F. Spritz the foliage weekly with softened or distilled water.
