Vanda Doctor Goh Keng Swee (Vintage Yellow)
“Vanda Doctor Goh Keng Swee (V. tessellata x V. Kwa Geok Choo) (E.M.K-A. Chew, 2013) is named for my paternal granduncle/first cousin twice removed, who was a founding father of the Republic of Singapore.
Having sensed the ultimate futility that an ongoing merger with the Malaysian Federation might bring, he negotiated the separation agreement that made Singapore independent on 9 August 1965. As Minister of Finance in self-governing Singapore (1959-65), he went on to hold the key Cabinet portfolios of the Interior and Defence (1965-67), Finance (1967-70), Defence (1970-79) and Education (1979-84).
He built key institutions, including the Economic Development Board (1961); Singapore Armed Forces (1965-67); Chartered Industries of Singapore (1967; after 1997, Singapore Technologies Engineering); Jurong Town Corporation (1968); Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (1968); Development Bank of Singapore (1968); Monetary Authority of Singapore (1970); Jurong Bird Park (1971); Electronics Test Centre (1972; after 1977, Defence Science Organisation); Singapore Zoo (1973); Temasek Holdings (1974); Military History Branch (1975; after 1991, Department of Strategic Studies); Oral History Department (1979); Singapore Symphony Orchestra (1979); Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (1981); Institute of East Asian Philosophies (1983; after 1992, Institute of East Asian Political Economy; and, after 1997, East Asian Institute); and Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (1987). He helped to create the Singapore Civil Service and mentored many of its senior administrators. Finally, he served as a key economic advisor to the State Council of the People’s Republic of China (1985-98).”
